Why Your Pool Game Isn’t Getting Better—and How to Change That
You play regularly. You make some great shots. But somehow, you keep making the same mistakes—and losing games you feel you should have won.
Sound familiar? Getting better at pool takes more than playing more games. It takes paying attention to what you practice and what happens between shots.
Here are some common reasons your pool game may have stalled, and simple ways to start improving.
1. You’re Playing Games Without Practicing Specific Skills
Playing against friends is fun, but a game gives you a different shot every turn. You might miss a cut shot and never try that exact shot again all night.
Try this: When a shot gives you trouble, set it up and shoot it 10 times. Keep the distance and angle consistent. Count your makes, then repeat the drill during your next visit.
Repetition helps you recognize the shot and see whether your adjustments actually work.
2. You’re Hitting Too Hard
A powerful shot can look impressive, but unnecessary speed makes it harder to control where the cue ball finishes. It can also magnify problems with your stroke.
Try this: Use enough speed to pocket the ball and reach your intended position. Practice making the same shot at soft, medium, and firm speeds, and watch how the cue ball behaves.
Control wins more games than power alone.
3. You’re Thinking About Only One Ball
Making a difficult shot feels great—until you realize you have no reasonable shot afterward.
Good pool involves pocketing the current ball while preparing for the next one.
Try this: Before you get down to shoot, choose your next ball and identify an area where you want the cue ball to finish. Start with a generous target area rather than demanding perfect position.
A simple next shot is often worth more than a spectacular current one.
4. Your Setup Changes From Shot to Shot
If your stance, bridge, alignment, and stroke change constantly, it becomes difficult to know why you missed.
Try this: Build a repeatable routine: decide on the shot while standing, step into your alignment, settle your bridge, take controlled practice strokes, and deliver the cue smoothly.
If the shot feels wrong once you are down, stand up and reset.
5. You’re Using Spin Before You Can Control Center Ball
Side spin can help with position, but it also changes how shots behave. Adding it automatically gives you more variables to manage.
Try this: Practice simple shots without side spin first. Build confidence in your aim and speed control, then introduce spin deliberately and observe the difference.
Use spin for a reason—not just because you can.
6. You Attempt Every Shot Instead of Making a Decision
The most aggressive shot is not always the best choice. A low-percentage attempt can leave your opponent an easy table.
Try this: Ask yourself two questions: “How likely am I to make this?” and “What will I leave if I miss?”
Sometimes a controlled safety is the strongest play. Practice legal defensive shots under the rules you are using, just as you practice pocketing balls.
7. You Don’t Study Your Misses
“The table rolled funny” might explain an occasional miss. It probably doesn’t explain the same miss every week.
Try this: After a missed shot, identify one likely cause. Was the aim off? Did you use too much speed? Did your cue move sideways? Were you distracted?
Look for patterns across several attempts rather than changing everything after one miss.
8. You Measure Improvement Only by Wins
You can play well and lose to a stronger opponent. You can also win while repeating habits that hold you back.
Try this: Track something you control: your score on a repeatable drill, how often you scratch, or how often you leave yourself a manageable next shot.
Those measures can reveal progress before your win record does.
Make Your Next Practice Session Count
Before your next game, spend 20 minutes practicing with a purpose:
Five minutes: Straight shots with a smooth, repeatable stroke.
Five minutes: One cut shot that regularly gives you trouble.
Five minutes: Cue-ball speed control toward a chosen target area.
Five minutes: Two-ball patterns—make one ball and leave position for the next.
Record one result so you have something to compare on your next visit.

Build Your Skills Through Competition
Regular matches can help you recognize where your game is strong and where you need more practice. You may discover that your shot-making is solid but your positioning needs attention—or that choosing a safety is sometimes a better decision than attempting a difficult shot.
League play gives you opportunities to work on:
Cue-ball control and positioning.
Shot selection and planning ahead.
Defensive play and safeties.
Consistency across multiple games.
Focus and composure during competition.
Improvement takes practice, and playing different opponents can help you see the game from new angles.
